RoleThe Cell Quality and Field Reliability team is the mass production facing portion of the Cell Engineering team within the R&D organization. The team leads cell projects that impact mass production cell performance, Tesla module manufacturability, and fleet reliability. The group supports development of new mass production cell candidates by guiding design specifications and collaborating on cell material and process development projects.The Gigafactory Cell Quality and Field Reliability team is seeking an entry-level engineer to lead incoming quality detection method development, root cause analysis, critical Li-ion cell component evaluation, and data analysis in both manufacturing and lab environments. The majority of projects will be multidisciplinary and focused on field reliability and safety, production throughput, and cost savings of vendor Li-ion cell and Gigafactory battery manufacturing.The ideal candidate possesses a well-rounded foundation in engineering first principles with an aptitude for hands on creative problem solving. Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills are necessary to excel in this role. The candidate for this position must exhibit the knowledge and drive needed to not only challenge the status quo, but also define and execute the optimal path forward.Responsibilities* Develop incoming cell quality control requirements to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability* Lead the identification, root cause analysis, and resolution of new cell-related manufacturing quality issues* Drive cross functional projects with manufacturing, supply chain, production quality, and research teams to develop new product specifications* Collaborate with suppliers to initiate Process Change Requests (PCRs) to improve manufacturability and field performance* Initiate continuous improvement projects within Tesla manufacturing and at suppliers* Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing risks are identified and mitigated* Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to cross functional disciplines* Produce cogent and intelligible data visualizations* Author presentations and summarize high-impact technical findings* Develop custom test methods to solve critical cell engineering issuesRequirements* B.S./M.S. Engineering/Material Science degree or 4+ years of experience in battery engineering* Demonstrated organizing of large projects across various disciplines* Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with technical and non-technical team members is essential* Strong desire to learn and use advanced characterization and analysis techniques in Li-ion cell and battery pack manufacturing processes* Detail-oriented with exceptional documentation, organization, and interpersonal skills* Ability to use tools to produce, manage, and interpret data* Experience working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment* Willing to work long hours and weekends on short notice* Ability to lift and sort parts up to 25 pounds as required* Exhibit a strong passion for sustainable energyPreferred Qualifications* CAM/CAD software (CATIA. SOLIDWORKS, etc.)* Programming (SQL, Python, MATLAB, R, etc.)* Familiarity with lab material characterization techniques (Spectrometry, Thermal, Metallurgical, Chemical, etc.)* Data analysis and visualization software (Tableau, JMP, Minitab, etc.)
