Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Operating engineering equipment such as bulldozer, motor graders and trucks with trailers and tractors engaged in fire suppression activities; operating motor vehicles with gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000lbs. Operating a dozer in confined areas on mountains/steep slopes/graded curves/shoulders, rocky or soft ground, and other similar conditions; construct dozer lines using knowledge of soil types/land features/terrain to minimize environmental impacts. Performing inspections and preventative maintenance, repairs and adjustments to power equipment;, and maintains proper records; monitors equipment for evidence of wear and failure; Performing daily checks of oil, water, and other fluid levels. Interpreting sketches/drawings/specifications; working from engineer?s stakes/plans/profiles/work orders; interpreting diagrams for construction of roads/ dikes/levees/installing water control structures. Operating construction type equipment in hazardous situations; operating motor vehicles over rough terrain, narrow country roads, or steep winding grades; operating engineering/heavy equipment on trails, dirt, or gravel roads. Arranging transport of tools and materials to the job site; physical capability to work alone in remote locations; hiking over rough terrain; may require overnight camping in primitive areas in extreme temperature. Following pertinent state/local laws pertaining to hauling/operation of construction/maintenance equipment; conducting safety inspections; monitoring and instructing others on road repair/construction projects; maintaining logbook/fuel use records. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:NWCG technical specialist qualification for Initial Attack Dozer Operator (upload IQCS or equivalent)Current Class A Commercial Driver's Licence (CDL)Prior on-the-line 90-day Wildland Fire experienceAble to lift 50 pounds or greaterExperience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement,Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving to handle controls to operate the equipment and attachments and make frequent adjustments to the equipment when in adverse conditions on rough terrain. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment, and by the jerking and jolting from operating on rough surfaces. During fire suppression assignments, the operator is exposed to smoky conditions, fire burns and similar conditions.Work Environment: Work is performed in al types of weather, often in an open driver's seat on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months per calendar year. When work and/or funds are unavailable, you will be placed into non-pay status. Pay status may be less than 6 months during initial appointment.This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS).
